Pachauri Chair of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is an economist and environmental scientist of immense repute who is renowned for his work in the areas of energy, environment, forestry, biotechnology, and the conservation of natural resources to government departments, institutions and corporate organizations worldwide.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri is Chairman of the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which, in 2007, was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with former US Vice President Al Gore.

The IPCC was established by the World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Environment Program in 1988, with Dr. Pachauri being elected Chairman in 2002.

Active in several international forums dealing with the subject of climate change and its policy dimensions, Dr. Pachauri has also led TERI (Tata Energy Research Institute), first as Director and, since April 2001, as Director-General. TERI does original work and provides professional support in the areas of energy, environment, forestry, biotechnology, and the conservation of natural resources to government departments, institutions, and corporate organizations worldwide.

To acknowledge his immense contribution to the field of environment, in 2001 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan—one of India's highest civilian awards that recognizes distinguished service of a high order to the nation in any field. He was also awarded the “Officier De La Légion D'Honneur” by the Government of France in 2006.

Dr. Pachauri has been a Visiting Professor, Resource Economics at the College of Mineral and Energy Resources, West Virginia University (August 1981—August 1982); Senior Visiting Fellow, Resource Systems Institute, East-West Center, USA (May—June 1982); and Visiting Research Fellow, The World Bank, Washington, DC (June—September 1990). Recognizing his vast knowledge and experience in the energy and environmental fields, the United Nations Development Program appointed him as a part-time Advisor in the fields of Energy and Sustainable Management of Natural Resources from 1994 to 1999.

In January 1999, Dr. Pachauri was appointed as director on the board for the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (a Fortune 500 company), and became a member on the board for the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Environment Agency, Government of Japan.

In July 2001, Dr Pachauri was appointed to the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.

Dr. Pachauri served as a Member of the faculty of several prominent academic and research institutions and has published 22 books and several papers and articles. Dr. Pachauri received a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Economics from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. and a Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1972.
